Accessorizing when no accessories are needed

Yeah, I've gotten over the whole screen protector thing — Gorilla Glass and its like is tough and I keep my phone in holster case most of the time so it's not banging around against my keys and the like.

As to an actual case on the phone — yeah, I still want a little something to protect it from droppage for the 2-3 years I'll have it. With the Moto X I got, I also wanted one that was see-through, so the bamboo backing I'd chosen would actually be, y'know, visible.

The one I ended up with is thin enough and clear enough to do that part of the job, while providing some good grippy nubblies but not much bulk to the phone (i.e., it will still fit easily into a case designed for a Moto X).

My Mobile Rules

1. No cases on a durable phone that will be valueless old tech in two years when I get a new one. *

2. No shitty three dollar plastic film to 'protect' nigh-fucking-indestructible gorilla glass screens.

* – Protective cases become viable when the devices they encompass get heavy enough to qualify as tablets; in other words, when their own weight makes it more likely they can't withstand being dropped. **

** – Corollary: don't buy a phone that, according to the above rule, is effectively a tablet.

  1. +Dave Hill and we like the same tech, yet again. I'm using the Moto X 2013. I do have a thick case, but it came with the holster. Care to link your combination so I can compare and maybe adopt it?

As far as screen protectors, I have largely abandoned them for any indoors-only device. But having a matte screen protector improves daylight visibility and diminishes fingerprints, and so is worth it (especially since avoiding bubbles is easy).

  2. +Gary Roth Cimo Motorola Moto X S-Line Case Flexible TPU Cover – Clear — this was one of the few "clear" case that actually had a large transparent area (vs a frosted / cloudy "clear"). I like it a lot — it provides good edge and back protection, leaves the "dimple" clear, and doesn't impinge on the front.

The case is Verizon's OEM Premium Quality Verizon OEM Leather Pouch Case Cover Holster Swivel Belt Clip case. The clip hold well (but has a stiff swivel to it), and it's every easy to get the phone in and out of it, even with the cover.

    Both obtained at Amazon.

  3. Cool. Now that I think about it, I may have a same size holster from the old GNex lying around, so I'd only need the case if I wanted to try it. I'm not that obsessed with thin-ness though. I currently use this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DMOMYFU/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?qid=1411821138&sr=8-5&pi=SL75 which has protected my phone from some very unfortunate falls.

Seriously though, the fat-shaming on the already lightweight and overly fragile devices has to stop. Unless you're trying to fit your phone into skinny jeans pockets, the thickness isn't very relevant. Only the weight.

  4. I don't think of it so much as fat-shaming as the dissonance between intentionally seeking out and paying a premium for the thinnest available phone so that you can then double its thickness with a case.

I've done holster cases like you have here in the past. This looks like a heftier unit than I'd feel the need for, but it certainly looks sturdy, and there are use cases where that would be very valuable indeed.
