The Marvel Cinematic Universe Strikes Back

Following up on DC's recent fleshing out of their slate of films, Marvel has further detailed their coming entries, adding both some new heroes to the MCU as well as giving titles for some of the sequels.

2015
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ant-Man
2016
Captain America: Civil War
Doctor Strange
2017
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Thor: Ragnarok
Black Panther
2018
Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1
Captain Marvel
Inhumans
2019
Avengers: Infinity War, Part 2

It's good to see Black Panther joining the MCU, and I will be shocked if Captain Marvel isn't the Carol Danvers version (which isn't to say that Mar-Vell might not show up in an earlier installment). That the Avenger (and both GotG and Captain Marvel) are tied into the Infinity War is a welcome non-surprise. And, huzzah, the MCU Thor will get its own version of Ragnarok (with multiple comic book selections to meld from).

The solo adventures of Tony Stark appear to be over — which is okay, because he's had a good arc (so to speak) in his three movies. And the Big Government Conspiracy Fest of the Civil War will be a very neat follow-on to the Winter Soldier. (Presumably Tony Stark will play some role in that one, too.)

(Utter speculation here: Ultron is Tony's fault/creation. That drives him to join forces with the government (if not forcibly drafted) to put forth the registration scheme that turns into the Civil War.)

Ant-Man is, presumably, due to join a rejiggered Avengers somewhere down the road. Not sure if or where Doctor Strange will fit into the broader scheme of things, but I look forward to finding out.

Of course, there's nothing to say that a few flops might not radically change, if not truncate, this series, but overall I'm pretty jazzed by what's here.

  1. So one femal lead movie out of 11 and most people will assume Captain Marvel is a man. I’m excited that Marvel movies are doing well and we will be getting a hefty helping, but come on!

    1. @Margie – I think it will be a much bigger thing once we get there.

At the same time — well, even if you take out the group movies, it’s still way out of whack. But that’s true even in the Marvel comics. There aren’t that many female super-heroes who can lead a film: Wasp is too close to Ant-Man; Spider-Woman is owned by Sony for films right now, ditto for Fox with the Invisible Woman and Storm; Sif is too close to Thor.

She-Hulk would be interesting, esp. if played for a lighter note as the comics often have. Black Widow is the obvious other character, but Kevin Feige seems to think she got “her film” with Capt America 2 (which is bullshit).

Hmmm. Scarlet Witch? Or, maybe, after the Inhumans movie we can get a Medusa flick.
