Memory and cognition make a lot more sense if you stop thinking of the brain as a computer with a video recorder attached, and think of it as a hive of well-meaning and generally efficient note-takers who spend a lot of time scribbling stuff down and then trying to find the boxes they stored the notes in.
That's part of the reason for déjà vu.
