We watched the season — and, as it turns out, series — finale of Forever tonight off the DVR, and …
If the showrunners saw the writing in the wind, kudos to them for wrapping up some major plot threads by the end: Abigail's disappearance (and her past discovery of Henry's secret), the menace of senior immortal Adam, and, of course, Henry and Jo and the Big Reveal.
That said, I'm really going to miss this show. Ioan Gruffudd played the two-century-old Henry Morgan splendidly, balancing his antiquarian knowledge with his obsessions, demons, long-lived wisdom, and ongoing passions. Judd Hirsch was utterly fantastic as Henry's son Abe, now father-aged senior. Joel David Moore was endless fun as assistant ME Lucas, who, for all he was played for yocks, grew as a character over just one season. Alana de la Garza's Detective Jo Martinez was a straightforward character, but played well, as washer partner, Donnie Keshawarz as Mike Hanson; both skirted with but veered away from most of the expected tropes for their position in the show.
The other supporting characters — the chief of detectives, the vanished wife, the sinister fellow immortal — were all fun as well, often defying (though minimally) the cliches.
Forever wasn't spectacular television, but the family enjoyed it a lot. I'm glad it was able to end on a plausibly complete note, but I'd have rather it went on … well, not forever, but certainly for longer than it did.
Thanks, all, for the entertaining times.
I loved the show and hate to see it go. They did a great job with the final episode, providing a satisfying conclusion in case it got cancelled but leaving room for things to go on if the show had been renewed. Looking forward to seeing Ioan Gruffudd in something new soon. Would love to see him as a villain on Elementary or Sherlock. Think he'd be a great bad guy.
