So we watched the debut episode of "Sense8"

And I think we'll probably be watching some more.

Co-created by the Warchowskis and by Joe Straczynski, Sense8 is a 12-episode series about group of highly disparate individuals, around the globe, who start becoming aware of each others' surroundings, thoughts, feelings, sensations. The story, it seems, is how they adapt to this, why it's happened, and how others who know/learn its happened react to it.

From a production aspect, the show is filmed beautifully, though in the first episode (as we are getting to know the eight individuals involved) the hopping around the globe gets a bit confusing. But that's par for the first episode, which is shrouded in mystery as to what's going on, why each of them are seeing images of the same woman (who killed herself earlier), and … well, stuff. Too much stuff. Is that overcondensed writing, or intentional mists of confusion for the protagonists and viewers alike? Hard to say … yet.

Overall, calling it "intense" would be the best one-word tonal description I can come up with. The show is not for kids, certainly. Aside from the complexity, there's moderately graphic sex, as well as violence. It is not, so far, as violent as Daredevil was (the only other original Netflix series I've seen), but there's no reason to think it won't go there.

The critical reception appears to be mixed, but it's hard to tell how much of that is due to only three eps being previewed by the media, and how much by people walking in with their own concepts about the Warchowskis.

The characters are all intriguing in their own ways, the premise is interesting, the pieces we've seen in just one episode are all good … the main question will be how and whether it will come together, if the story pay-off down the line is worth it, and how often the family will feel geared up to watch another episode.

  1. I'll note that, just one episode in, this is my favorite Freema Agyeman performance of all time (or at least the one that's the most interesting (and that's not meant specifically in a salacious fashion)).

  2. You know, it's funny. My other favorite supporting actor in this show, Alfonso Herrera, was someone I found completely forgettable in his big "everyone knows me from this role" role in Rebelde (a telenovela from about a decade ago).
