New Zealand is looking to replace its national flag (which looks just like Australia's, except for red stars for the Southern Cross instead of white). The narrowed-to-40 results are pretty cool, and some of them quite different from any other flags out there. I'll be interested to see how it all ends up.
(I'm trying to think of how a similar US contest might go, and I see it ending in nothing but tears.)

While designers or graphic artists would bring some definite strengths to the team, that can lead to its own aesthetic squabbles, or to something that is "bold" and "revolutionary" and "a challenge" and will strike most folk as utterly hideous (see: much modern art).
My hope is that the folk who are involved are being advised by a good team of graphic designers who can advocate for some interesting stuff.
Well, the panel they have is not utterly bad. Certainly I have a lot of respect for Kate de Goldi, Lt. Gen. Rhys Jones & Hana O'Regan. I know Rod Dury, but I don't think he's someone I'd look for to choose a flag and I've no idea about any of the others, except a couple of them are (or were once) very good at sports.
