How to defeat terrorism

Follow the money.

I do have to wonder whether some of Clinton's leaked assessment about our dear allies in the Gulf, and their role in funding / paying off / turning a blind eye to terrorism will be raised at tonight's debate.

There Is Only One Way to Defeat ISIS
We must hold accountable our Middle Eastern “allies”—the states and bankers and political elites—who persist in funding mass murder.

  1. There is one problem here, ISIS has more support globally than we give them credit for. Those states with rich donors aren't going to jail them because they support ISIS indirectly. But let's assume we could get them to back the idea. Money won't stop ISIS, only slow them down. They are on Mohammad's mission bringing back the Caliphate. Everything they are doing is out of their religious texts. And worse, these are mostly normal people, doctors, lawyers, etc.

Money is just one piece, like Maajid Nawaz says we need to offer people a better alternative to Islamic extremism. Right now it is too appealing for many in the Middle East.

  2. +Jon Weber But money is a critical part of being able to spread that terroristic ideology (or just terror and power, depending on what you think Da'esh's actual motivations at the top are). Money buys weapons, and ammo, and fuel. It pays for food and supplies for the recruits to its army. It pays for plane tickets, and remote support for recruiters and infiltrators. It pays for websites.

Cutting off the money isn't going to destroy Da'esh, or any of its ilk, but it will restrain its activities significantly, making it a lot easier to offer people an alternative.

  3. +Dave Hill I can't argue cutting off the money would help, but I think it has to be part of a larger strategy. Their sources of income are wider than I think many suspect. And they seem to have no shortage of recruits.

  4. +Jon Weber Addressing the recruits (and why the are recruits) is another, longer-term, and more subtle, subject.

But remember that it takes money to reach out to those recruits, and to bring them into the cause, and to support them in the field.
