Standing Up for the Other

Of the governor (of, I am proud to say, Colorado) who stood up for the rights of a rejected, villainized, demonized people … and paid the price. A true Profile in Courage.

The governor who didn’t give in to fear … and paid a price for it
When other governors refused to take in an unpopular group, this governor stood up and tried to change people’s minds.

  1. Such a great story. I am pleased every time I walk to the library in Denver from the parking structure and pass the Ralph Carr Judicial Building. I agree with plug for “The Principled Politician”. It is flattering, but not fawning. (He was a conservative Republican who opposed the New Deal, and made deals to balance Colorado’s budget with what some would call draconian measures. But he did get the state on solid financial footing, which it sorely needed at the time.) And if he had lived longer, he might have had a successful return to politics especially locally, but he suffered the effect of diabetes.

  2. I wonder if that is the reason my mother’s godfather, an Italian living on Coronado Island in San Diego, relocated to Central City. The family story is only that he was forced to leave San Diego.
