Oh, and I'm into "Into the Badlands," too

Well you're not alone at cringing at martial arts movies. But you're also not alone in not understanding kung fu. The movie action is broken down into blocky steps so that the public can see what's going on. At real speed and fluidity nobody would get anything from it, except an expert. M.A. movie fights are like speaking an english sentence where you halt between every word, and then perform/say each word in an affected way.
The Asian public who understands kung fu just fills in the way it's supposed to be mentally. Those in the know can see the chess game that each move suggests, regardless of the cheesiness that follows, or poor strategic choice made next. Also in the movies, only one facet to kung fu (striking) is usually employed. Seizing and immobilizing ( I encourage you to google Chin Na) are not flashy and not in the movies. Kung fu has several pillars other than striking.
As for the plots, well that's just a budget and greed thing. Nobody is going to give a M.A. movie the care that Star Wars gets.
I love this show.
It was interesting, set up some nice suspense and plot.
+Justin Cognito Oh, I'm not saying it's realistic, just that it's technically a leap above the vast majority of what passes for fight blocking on American TV today.
+Dave Hill I definitely have to check out this show, looks good. Thanks for the heads up by posting this.
Gotta admit, it was pretty slick.
Well, ep 2 this series appears to be Logan's Run vs Uncle Toms Cabin vs Kung Fu vs GM with serious Plot on rails.
It gets one more ep.
