This particular process is very familiar to me, being the basis of at least one pre-breakfast ever year at our big family campout in California. We've never done it with a bar of chocolate before, but any number of pie filling ingredients can be used to one's taste.
(The baking part on a campout is done in a Scotch Box Oven [see http://bigscoutproject.com/2011/05/30/make-a-scotch-oven/ for an example]; at home, you can just use a normal oven.)
