Trump! Cruz! Let's call the whole thing off!

Stephen Colbert on the GOP's dilemma: the insane narcissist or the smarmy ideologue none of his colleagues likes.

It's sort of fascinating watching the GOP's car crash this election season. It would be more fascinating if we weren't all in the car with them.

  1. Frankly, I blame the establishment side for not having their shit together. If they didn't have four people squabbling over the moderate vote, these guys would be reduced to a sideshow. Unfortunately they've gone out of their way to ensure that the party doesn't actually have that much power, so now they can't get their people in line.

  2. +Brittany Constable I'd argue from the other direction, that the party establishment specifically riled up the populist base via hyperbolic rhetoric about Obama and astroturfing Tea Partiest movements (or encouraging their wealthy benefactors to do so) — and now, suddenly, they find themselves riding the tiger and unable to get off.

If there are (or were) multiple people dividing the moderate Republican vote, there have also been multiple folk dividing the zany conservative populist / base vote (Trump, Cruz, Carson, Huckabee, Santorum, Walker), with the relative moderates (Rubio, Bush, Perry) all pandering to that base in order to try and get some of it. The only ones who've come anywhere near sticking to their guns are Graham and Paul, neither of whom ever stood a chance.

You're right for blaming the party establishment, and it's a monster of their own making — unfortunately, it's a monster that stands to cause damage to everyone in the nation.
