Even if Donald Trump goes down to ignominious defeat and retreats to a Howard Hughes-esque Trump Tower suite for the rest of his life, he's already done a lot of damage to America's perception around the world — and to the cause of representative democracy. (I'm pretty sure he's been a great recruiting tool for Islamist extremists, too.)

Yeah, even if he loses (and it's scary as hell that I think there's a chance he won't lose), it will take years to undo the damage caused by people taking him seriously.
