Trump made a lot of noise about how he was not beholden to anyone because he was (in the primaries, at least, and kinda-sorta) not taking any big donations, but was running a campaign using (kinda-sorta) his own money. The message was clear: big donations are inherently corrupting, so trust the guy who who's rich enough that he (kinda-sorta) doesn't need to take them.
Which makes one wonder, of course, why then the Trump-approved GOP platform calls for getting rid of campaign donation limitations, disclosures, or any whiff of public financing of campaigns.

Trump never cared about big money politics, and in fact wants to make the situation far worse.
He is a firm believer in the old saying, "He who has the Gold makes the Rules"
