None of this will come as much surprise — and much is predicated on trial balloon leaks of what Donald Trump's budget proposals will actually shape up to be — but all signs are that the EPA, NOAA, the DoE, pretty much every federal agency that does anything to look at pollution and climate change is facing massive cuts.
(Curiously, though the new EPA chief, Scott Pruitt, rejecting decades of mainstream research, says that still more research is needed to determine if CO2 is a significant greenhouse gas, he's also overseeing the dismantling of the EPA's research arm. Imagine that.)
Ostensibly, these are to pay for a massive military build-up, but there the targeting is such that it's clear the secondary (if not primary) effect is to pull back from all federal efforts to research, let alone restrict, carbon emissions and climate change, as well as environmental protection and pollution control in general, at both the federal and state level. And the cuts themselves will literally only pay for hours of defense spending over the next year.
Again, no surprise, but worth being aware of anyway.
Trump’s War on the Climate Has Begun – The Atlantic
From the EPA to the White House, from the budget to the federal register, his administration is mounting an all-out assault.
And when there is no US climate science, what remains will be dismissed as foreign or un-American. As, once upon a time, relativity was dismissed as “Jewish science”.
