Laughing at Nazis

Counter-protesters in Charlotte, NC in 2012

The idea of dealing with Nazis (et al.) by pointing and laughing makes a seductive amount of sense. Nazis, white supremacists, neo-fascists, KKKers seem to depend so much on being fierce and shouty and uber-ultra-manly / aggressive / assertive / alpha doggy.  Practicing “humorous subversion” seems to be effective in Wunsiedel, Germany, where they not only meet annual gatherings of neo-Nazis with clowns and jokes, they actually treat the march the neo-Nazis take as an “involuntary walkathon” — garnering 10 Euro per meter from local individuals and businesses to donate to an organization that helps people get out of right-wing extremist organizations.

As Thomas More put it, “The devil … the proud spirit cannot endure to be mocked.”
