When in doubt, reduce the data available to the public

The FBI’s excuse that, “Hey, not quite as many people were looking at a given table, so why go to the trouble of creating it” is not only shortsighted on the face of it, but patently absurd when one considers how such tables are created — not by some team of overworked guys with pads of paper delicately hand-crafting artisanal analytical tables, but by a piece of report-writing software that could function just as easily on 2016 data as it did on 2014, 2013, etc.

When people stop releasing as much information as they used to, and the information is relatively trivial for them to produce, the questions should always be, “What are they hiding?” or “What message are they trying to craft?” The same questions should pertain when data is no longer available directly from government agency sources, but needs to be inquired after through “Public Information Officers.”
