“American Gods” is in trouble

We love the Starz American Gods series in its first season. Showrunners Michael Green and Bryan Fuller took Neil Gaiman’s excellent novel about belief, faith, religion, and what Americans truly worship, and made it into an even more excellent and trippy TV series.

Shockingly, the two gents are leaving the show for the second season (though they have already written most of the scripts), due to creative conflicts and budget limitations by the production house, Fremantle Media.

That’s not necessarily a deadly blow, but it’s a huge punch in the face, given the two men have been essentially responsible for the tone and content (beyond Gaiman’s foundational work). That’s not something Fremantle can easily replace well.

I’m not completely blaming Fremantle here — $10M per ep sounds … remarkably high, and that’s what they apparently wanted to stick with. And while I think the show is fantastic, the overall viewership numbers may not have warranted spending a lot more.

Still, it’s a darn shame.

Report: American Gods Showrunners Are Leaving the Hit Show [UPDATE]
Earlier this year, American Gods debuted to loads of buzz and positive reviews. The philosophical, trippy adaptation of the classic Neil Gaiman novel became one of the most talked-about shows of early 2017. But, in a shocking turn, the men responsible for its existence are reportedly exiting the Starz show.

  1. +Dave Hill we all want those wonderful things to last longer. It's one of the hard lessons in life.
I wanted firefly to last. I wanted farscape to last forever. I wanted them to finish American Gods because it is so well done. So many precious gems that gladden our hearts just don't seem to last.
But we had them for a while. We treasure the experience. They are gifts, however brief.
