— Mission Impossible: Fallout — I love it that the MI series is getting so meta that the fact that Ethan keeps being betrayed by his own country isn’t seen as a weakness in the series, but as a new plot point to exploit. Those who like MI films (which I admit I kind of do) will find this the sort of thing they like (whether or not they go to see it in a theater).
— The Meg — It’s Jaws, with a bigger CG budget, as a prehistoric giant shark does just what you would expect it to do with an underwater lab and a beach community. Ho-hum.
— Adrift — I kept waiting for the prehistoric giant shark to eat the sailboat that the beautiful young couple are stranded on in the middle of the Pacific. Based on a true story (sans giant shark). Not my cuppa.
— Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom — Those who like the Jurassic movies will likely enjoy this. The previous trailers made it look like it was about rescuing dinosaurs from the island (which has abruptly gone all volcanic). The new trailer indicates that things are a bit more sinister than that.
— Venom — I have never been a fan of Venom in the comics, but this looks pretty good. The trailer gave enough story to hook me without telling the whole movie. I suspect this is one I’ll stream eventually.
— Incredibles 2 — I’ve already seen this trailer, but it remains good-looking. I am hopeful it will match the original.
— Solo — Same trailer as before, but I’m still liking it. The actor does look a bit “prettier” than Harrison Ford, but I’m willing to put up with that.
So seven trailer, with just the last two likely theater revisits. Not bad.
I'm really hopping this in the last M:I movie so they release a decent boxset. They're a sort of guilty pleasure of mine.
I’ve seen most of those trailers before, Adrift is new to the rotation.
+Stan Pedzick I've seen it (or an earlier version of it) before. I have no burning need to see it again.
I forgot to mention that both Meg and Jurassic World have scenes of dino-fish swimming under hapless beachgoers. Someone has, indeed, been watching too much Shark Week.
i can’t believe what a sucker you are. if you’ve read even a tiniest bit about solo’s production you’d know that flick has no chance of turning out even half decent.
don’t be fooled because it’s part of the star wars franchise aka the teflon franchise. i can tell this is nothing but a huge cash grab and a kowtow to the worst kind of fan-service. no surprise, what with a director whos a studio puppet and a no-talent lead actor
heck, deadpool 2 just moved up to compete with solo. you think they’d do that if solo was going to come even close to previous star wars films? unlike you 20th century fox knows lucasfilms got a stinker
if solo turns out to be even watchable my apologies and i will question everything reality has taught me
@eli Trailers can certainly be grossly misleading, and I know there has been some production drama. But I’ve also heard doom-and-gloom about a lot of movies, esp. in the Disney/Lucas/Marvel orbit. Every Star War film that has come out since the Disney acquisition has been rumored to be a horrible stinker, to have had horrible production problems. I’ve enjoyed each one (some more than others, but all of them).
Going strictly by the trailer (which is risky), I like what I see. We’ll see when it comes out.
fyi i am a major star wars fan.
but this….well, i have a VERY bad feeling about this
you’ve got a point…but these aren’t just rumors. the original directors really were fired, they really did bring an acting coach for the lead actor, ron howard really did reshoot the entire movie in the span of a few weeks, most important, deadpool 2 really is competing with solo. That last one has me worried most. I cant remember the last time a Star Wars movie had competition from another blockbuster.
I mean, we wont know for sure until solo actually is released but…….what I’m seeing in the trailers doesn’t look great. Like, lots of cheap cgi. And the whole thing just feels like and unnecessary prequel. Again, i say this as a huge Star Wars fan, someone who really enjoyed the original trilogy and both episodes VII & VIII
Directors have been fired from films before. Disney (and Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm) has been relatively ruthless about doing that to protect the brand (both Star Wars and Marvel), which probably means it won’t be great, but probably means it won’t be wretched, either. I mean, it’s not like Howard is a hack. (Nor are acting coaches all that unusual, esp. if there’s somethimg very specific that’s being sought.)
For those who want more backstory on the drama, here.
The competition with Deadpool 2 is worrisome, esp. if it gets framed as “edgy movie for the young and hip vs. a tired franchise that you can catch on Blu-Ray later” sort of thing (which is precisely what the Sony folk want). For me, I’m just as happy picking up DP2 on disc or streaming later, and enjoying Solo opening weekend.
i get what your saying and thanks for reassurance but…..the bad buzz sure seems stronger for solo than other star wars movies. personally, at the very least i would not yet have high expectations for this movie. until the reviews come in i think it’s better to remain skeptical. (for the record i never felt the need to be skeptical about episodes vii or viii)
plus going by the trailers it just seems to lack the realism of force awakens and last Jedi…seems like they went overboard on the cgi. and the fact that it was almost entirely reshot on such a tight schedule is worrying.
howard may not be a hack, but he isn’t teflon either. this is the guy responsible for the da vinci code movies after all.
also just from reading the brief plot…..there doesn’t seem to be anything new or unexpected. and especially post—rogue one or last jedi ….it just feels like a step down (btw i liked rogue one but still felt an anthology film wasn’t necessary. personally i just care about the trilogies.
and if solo actually turns out bad..don’t say i didn’t warn you. i may be worried over nothing but still……
btw just remembered Ron howard also directed the dilemma (bad comedy with vince vaugh and kevin james)
well, looks like i was wrong about solo. according to reviews it’s not half bad……but still at the lower end of the spectrum when compared to other star wars movies (prequels aside)
@eli – I enjoyed it a fair amount. Not as much as some, more than others. I hope, if you choose to go, you enjoy it as well.
well i’ll be seeing it with a friend so guess i’ll find out soon enough. honestly, i’m shocked it even turned out this well but even most of the post it i’ve review found a lot of flaws so there’s that.
it’s not like i wanted solo to be bad but with all the negative buzz i heard (much more than with other star wars films) i had REALLY low hopes for this movie. also i thought a han solo prequel was totally unnecessary so from reviews guess i was right in that respect
btw area gonna post the trailers before solo? so i know whether to get 2 the theater early
