George Lucas famously modeled his first Star Wars movie after the Buck Rogers / Flash Gordan serials of old. But, honestly, it sure seems to work dandy as an 80s-style anime.

Well, yeah… but Vader's helmet is also clearly modeled on Japanese military helmets. There's more than a little Kurosawa in the whole thing. So this isn't surprising at all. (And I'd also watch.)
