El Rushbo appeals to the very worst parts of his listeners. The dark voices that they know are wrong, but having someone say those dark things in the light of day justifies their recism and misogyny. MY father-in-law listens to this crap and it drives me batty. HE gets all his info from Fox and RW radio. He’s a farmer is VERY rural Wisconsin, so different outlets for news just aren’t available (also, wouldn’t know a computer if it bit him). When Obama won the election he told us he’d have a loaded gun under his bed because he was convinced that some sort of combined government confiscation of firearms was coming and simulataneously there’d be some sort of gang of blacks coming to ravage his town.
I’ve been to Plainfield, NOONE wants to live in a farm town of 500 whose only claim to fame is having spawned Ed Gein. *sigh*
THe real problem is there’s no talking to him or others in his demographic without immediately having them shut down the discussion.
The thing with Rush, which differentiates him (I think) from so many of dolts on the Right is that I don’t think he believes his own crap — he’s just found a lucrative niche. He’s more of a Howard Stern or a Glenn Beck than, say, a Bryan Fischer — but he’s nastier than Beck and more politically oriented than Stern, and there’s way too many people who see him as a truthteller. Which is just damned scary.
