Death

It sucks.

I got word today that my online friend, Les Jenkins, passed away. He was suffering from too-late-diagnosed pancreatic, et al. cancer, knew he was dying soon, and, after a few weeks of hospice care, did.

Dammit.

Les started his “Stupid Evil Bastard” blog a little bit after I started this one. We crossed path fairly early on, ended up being fairly regular commenters back and forth in different social media, and eventually developed one of those weird Internet friendships that the 21st Century has wrought. We never met in person, I regret to say, but we discussed things online, we chatted online back and forth, we actually talked on the telephone multiple times (as we older folk do), and we even did, over the last decade, several podcasts/vlogs where we just nattered on about politics and pop culture and philosophy and life.

And now, as they say, he’s gone.

Les was smart and clever. He was a deft hand at PC technology, that being his career path. He had a dry sense of humor, and a deep devotion to the people and causes he held dear. He no pretenses to personal virtue (thus the name of his blog), but never became utterly cynical about human nature (thus the subtitle to his blog, “What the fuck is wrong with you people?”

Les was a firm atheist. He’d reached that conclusion through consideration and logic and reasoning. He could be merciless in dealing with theists (usually fundies) who would come to his site to debate him or, worse, preach at him. Yet even though I’m not of that persuasion, he never subjected me to his razor tongue, probably because I wasn’t interested in debating him on the subject. We’ll all eventually learn the truth (or not be in a position to care about it), and both of us were willing to play that long game.

Which turned out to be far shorter for Les than it should have been.

So on the one hand, it would be presumptuous of me to  consider him in any sort of afterlife, looking down with that crooked smirk at the world. But my own belief, or weakness, as someone who believes in such an afterlife (though clueless as to how it’s constituted), is to hope that someday I’ll get a chance to sit down with him, in “person” this time, and chat over what he’s learned. He’s definitely the sort of company I’d want in such a state.

And, of course, if he was right, neither of us will know otherwise. So either way, it’s all fine.

I’ve lost family members over the years. I was there when my dad passed. But Les — a peer, a friend, someone who went from “Oh, hey, another tweet” to “he’s gone” in a seeming heartbeat — that’s a wake-up call to the transitory nature of life, a reminder of the mortality of anyone (self included).

Discussions of death should be about the subject who’s gone, but inevitably are about the person writing about them.

Anyway …

… thanks, Les. You helped me through some PC tech issues, sure. You engaged me in interesting conversation and consideration of my own beliefs. You were a friendly presence in my life, and my life was better for you being in it. Even without an afterlife, your impact on others around you lives on. Rest in peace, sir.

Still chatty after all these years

The Stupid Evil Podcast is … well, it was fun.

I’ve done a number of podcasts over the years with Les (of Stupid Evil Bastard), but remarkably it’s been three years or so since the last one.

Well, at least nothing exciting has happened in the time frame, amirite?

So, yeah, it’s a lot of Les and I chatting about COVID-19, gaming (video and otherwise), TV shows, and a bit of politics.

Les talks about the media extravaganza here.

And the podcast itself …

We’re going to try to do this a bit more regularly in the future. Which is a low bar, given how long it’s been since last time. At any rate, enjoy!

UPDATE (3/2022): With Les’ passing, I’ve made a copy of this into my own YouTube channel, which is what’s now linked above.

And, lo, there shall come another SEB Podcast!

It’s been an astonishing three years since +Les Jenkins and I did one of his Stupid Evil Bastard podcasts (the biggest takeaway from which was that it had been three years since we previously did it, and that was clearly way, way too long).

Anyway, if you’ve ever wanted to see/hear what Les and I shooting the breeze about pop culture, movie/TV remakes, Donald Trump, and Avengers: Infinity War look and sound like, here’s your golden opportunity. (Avengers spoilers start at 47:17.)

Les is a cool guy. It’s fun doing these. We’ll clearly have to do this again something sooner than three years from now …

UPDATE (3/2022):  With Les’ passing, I’m copying this over to my own YouTube account.

A Call for Topics to Natter About with Les

+Les Jenkins and I did several Podcasts a while an appalling number of years ago, where we basically got together and rambled about different topics near and dear to our hearts or based on questions pre-submitted from the studio audience. (https://hill-kleerup.org/blog/mypodcasts/ddtbseb-podcasts has my copies of them, though I might have missed on in there.)

So we're going to give it another go, probably as a Google Hangout on Air (so that you can see our faces the subsequent never-to-be-viral YouTube video).

So … for anyone who follows me along on my blog or on Google+ (or, heck, wherever), are there any questions or topics you'd like me to wax eloquent about with Les?

Wherein stupidity and evil are cast about a pod

Les and I did the Stupid Evil Podcast on Sunday, and he finally has gotten it uploaded (commentary here). We nattered about politics, movies, and whatever else entered our sadly stressed stream of consciousness.

Enjoy.

UPDATE (3/2022): The MP3 is here.

Ahoy! Thar be the Missing Podcast!

Les has posted the Stupid Evil Podcast from last weekend up on his blog, which means I can download it then post it here on my blog, too, because that’s how we do things around here.

This time out, it was Les and me and George Wiman from Decrepit Old Fool.   Les says the rhythm was off a bit, and I’m not sure if that’s because he was feeling a bit off, or because he was late (though DOF and I had a fine time chatting back and forth on Skype), or because Les and George and I are so in tune with so many things that it was sort of like, “Let’s talk about chocolate.  Well, I think chocolate tastes good.  Well, so do I. Me, too. Um … okay, what do we talk about next?”

Topics we covered include:

  1. Google’s Reader and Plus debacle.
  2. Videogames, machinisma, geek life.
  3. Herman Cain and Mitt Romney.
  4. Mississippi’s Personhood Proposal (fortunately gone down to defeat in the interim).
  5. Apple pays its corporate taxes.
  6. Occupy Wall Street
  7. Why 2012 will likely be more of voting against Obama’s opponent than voting for Obama.
  8. Stewart vs Colbert vs Maher
Regardless of what Les says about the content, I had fun. And now you can, too.

Podcast, They Recorded …

And here’s the result of Les and my doing yet another of our intermittent joint podcasts on Saturday. It’s an hour and twenty minutes of casual nattering back and forth over such amazing topics as:

  • Troy Davis
  • Rick Perry
  • Other GOP candidates
  • Extremism vs compromise
  • Prohibition
  • Comic books and the comics industry
  • Howard the Duck
  • Shakespeare
  • Other stuff we’re reading
  • Why muting your cell phone during a podcast is a good professional tip.

Plus sundry side comments here and there.

And, honestly, it’s not nearly as organized as it sounds.

Many thanks to Les for doing all the heavy lifting on this, in terms of recording and mixing and all that good stuff.  I just sat there and talked, which isn’t that much effort for me, obviously.

(Cross-posted from SEB)

Podcast ahoy!

Thanks, Les, for getting our podcast from Monday up and on the air.  Woot!

We rambled a bit (as inconceivable as that sounds), discussing Sarah Palin, the GOP candidates for President, the putative Democratic candidate for President, how little we understand about Buddhism, medication and mental health, recently read books, current favorite TV shows, and, of course, Patriotism and the Fourth of July.

You can listen to us natter on for 90 minutes by clicking Play on the player below (which also lets you play in a new window or download the file).  I’ll be adding it to the Podcasts tab after this post goes up.

EDIT (3/2022): The MP3 for this podcast is here.

And the crowd cried, “Podcast!”

Jesus says, "Don't be a dick!"

Les and I did the fourth(ish) Stupid Evil Bastard podcast today.  It was much fun, as usual, at least to do (no clue whether it will be fun to listen to).

We nattered on about tipping, Dr. Laura, the skeptic community “Don’t Be a Dick” controversy, hypocrisy, freedom, and a variety of other stuff. This time we clocked in at 2 hours and 8 minutes, which may be case of at least too much of a good thing (or way too of a mediocre thing).  Or maybe not enough of a faboo thing.  You decide.

In discussing the recent Dr. Laura contretemps, not to mention lack of dickishness, we did engage in a fair amount of, um, NSFW language.  So don’t play this over the speakers at the office, or in the streets where you might scare the horses, or if you fear it might burn your cockle-shelled ears.

The podcast can be directly downloaded to your machine here, or you can click on the little player at the bottom of the screen. It, along with the previous iterations in the series, can always be found in the Podcast tab at the top of the page.

UPDATE: I’m re-listening to the podcast (well, maybe not all tonight), and I’m adding in cross-references and links in the comments.

It’s Podcastic!

We recorded the Third Stupid Evil Podcast this afternoon, starring Les, Your Faithful Author, and the Mom of Les.  Yes, Mary of “Momma’s Corner” was on the line, and we got many insights into what went into Making Les the Les He Is Today.

No, really, it was a lot of fun, and while I was much less obsessively chatty than usual, I was quite entertained by our discussions of The Last Airbender, The Afterlife, Fruit Preserves, and Making Fun of Guys Who Are Steadily Growing Older.

It really was fun. Les’ mom seems a very nice lady who I’d love to visit some day (I envision her sitting around with my own mom, chatting and laughing with my mom about Where They Went Wrong).  It was a pleasure talking with her, and, of course, Les.

You can find the MP3 file here, or go to this SEB post for a convenient playing interface.  A link to this podcast will be in the sidebar or some other prominently placed point on this blog for your future podcast-listening pleasure.

UPDATE: And now you can click on the player below to listen to this choice bit of fun.

Podcast 2, Listening Public 0

Les and I got the second successful SEB Podcast in the can last evening. We ended up covering a bit of ground from the infamous Lost Podcast, but we got some new material in there as well. I had a lot of fun doing it, and I only hope you have nearly as much fun (if you are so inclined) listening to it.

You can download the MP3 from here, or go to Les’ page here and both read his comments and click on the little player to listen to the whole from the little player at the bottom of the post.

We nattered about 36Mb worth, or about an hour and a half.

Many thanks to Les for making it happen. As always, the podcast link will be in the sidebar for future reference.

UPDATE:  You can click in the player below to hear the podcast.

My initial foray into podcasting is now ON THE INTERNETZ!

What hath God wrought?, as someone once posted.

The podcast that Les and I did last weekend is now online.  Les gives good summary:

We cover a number of topics starting with Podcasts and moving on to a question from Decrepit Old Fool that we talk about a lot, but never actually answer. That’s followed by tangents galore that are related to DOF’s question by only the thinest of hairs and then a little gushing over the fact that George reads our blogs and some discussion of our religions backgrounds, faith healing, and politics and how we should be the leaders of the world except that we’re too lazy. We close it out with a discussion of James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar which may contain a couple of spoilers so you may want to stop listening at that point if you haven’t seen the movie.

The management disclaims any permanent mental or emotional damage from listening to the podcast. No refunds will be given for burning 1 hour and 22 minutes of your precious life listening to it.

simpsons-homer-angel-devil

Kudos to Les for actually doing all the technological heavy lifting on this — helping me figure out the voice client to use (we spared no expense, i.e., we spent no money), and then tweaking the sound levels (to make up for the fact that we spared no expense). He also set up our individual channels so that one of us is talking in one of your ears, the other of us in the other.   I’ll leave to you which of us plays which memetic role.

Anyway, enjoy.  The downloadable file is here (57Mb), or there’s an RSS feed, or you can even just go to Les’ page and play it there(Mom, that last option is probably easiest.) Let me know what you think in the comments.  That may decide (through interest, lack of interest, or brickbats) whether there’s an Episode 2, or we just sit on our laurels. (Constructive criticism is always welcome, natch.)

I have one great comfort — no matter how bad it is, it’s gotta be better than what some guys do behind a microphone.

UPDATE: The player below will actually play the podcast for you! Amazing!
