New NCSoft licensing stuff re CoH and CoV:
First off, there will be just a single $15/mo. subscription fee. Whether you buy CoH, CoV, or both, the ongoing subscription cost will be the same.
More interestingly (bolding mine):
Along with the value of being able to play the two games for $14.99, players will receive four additional character slots per game server, and access to crossover areas from both games such as player-versus-player zones in City of Villains. Additionally, City of Heroes’ players who subscribe to both games will have access to the base building and base raids featured in City of Villains.
Okay, would I pay the whatever-X dollars to buy the CoV discs and install them, just so that I could have four additional character slots on Champion?
Little ol’ alt-o-holic me?
Hell, yeah.
PvP zones? Not so much interested (any more than I’ve ever entered an arena match). What the “access to the base building” means is a bit more intriguing. Does this mean hero bases will be available? Or that raids on villain bases will be allowed? Stay tuned.

Well….I think that the CoJ needs a base. Really, where else is Kazima going to be able to lounge around and talk about Smiting. 🙂
Amorpha will insist on a sushi bar too.
Welll…duh….so will Zazi. With a real Chef straght from Tokyo…with a Fugu license. 🙂
Psi-clone glances at his insurance bills and shudders …
More info from CuppaJo:
It’s 12 slots per server total. It is highly probable that we will be adding more servers as well.
When you log in to either CoV or CoH and pick a server you will go to a character screen that shows both your heroes and villains. You can have 2 Heroes and 10 Villains or any combo that adds up to 12.
[…] We would like to offer additional character slots for a fee in the near future and are working on making this a reality. [/quote]
So … eh?
First off, CoV servers will be named “Champion/Triumph/Guardian” etc.? Weird. Unless they alias them or something, I guess.
And second, this means I really want to run CoV on a different server than CoH (if I ever do both), otherwise I’ll be even more alt constrained.
And … added slots for a fee? Kiss cross-server character transfer good bye, since that would ruin any chance of making money on such a scheme. That’s a real pity.
Hmmm. More info from the CoV FAQ:
Will City of Heroes and City of Villains share the same servers?
Yes, City of Heroes and City of Villains will share the same universe and, therefore, they must coexist on the same servers. Many of the existing (and yet-to-be-released) features and zones within City of Heroes and City of Villains require that Heroes and Villains be able to interact fully.
For customers who have purchased both City of Heroes and City of Villains, how will they manage their hero and villain characters?
There will be a few distinct changes. Players will manage their heroes and villains from the same menu interface. The villain and hero menu themes will alternate based on the player’s most recent selection. For example, if you have selected a villain, the interface will reflect City of Villains.
How many character slots will City of Villains have?
Whereas people with only City of Heroes or City of Villains will have the normal eight character slots per server, those with both games will use a new interface with twelve character slots. Those twelve slots will accommodate both heroes and villains (so if players choose to, they can fill all twelve with heroes or with villains).
Can existing City of Heroes users purchase City of Villains just for the additional four character slots per server?
Absolutely! However, City of Villains has far more value than extra character slots, including the ability to carry base building over to City of Heroes, base raids, and some very cool features to come in the future.
Will I have to purchase City of Villains to have access to the new PvP zones?
No. City of Heroes players will gain access to the three new PvP zones by the start of the City of Villains weekend head-start (the weekend head-start comes when you purchase the pre-order box).
Interesting. Of course, the tying of “base building” to CoV functionality makes me wonder how that will work with an SG where not everyone has purchased CoH.
Or, as I actually meant to type, where not everyone has purchased CoV.
I would assume as long as someone in the SG…and hopefully the officers have CoV they should be good to go.
I Preorderd CoV a month ago…I really go and see if it came in.
I may do the pre-order Real Soon Now.
My pre-order was late, and I didn’t know for about two weeks that they were supposed to hand me a box with a CD in it, so I’m still waiting for my CoV beta-testing account to become active.
Thought it had last night, but tje e-mail was just a newsletter. Did you see that our subscription to the comic is going digital? :p
No, I didn’t. Saw the mail, but didn’t read it yet.
