Friday was my 7-year anniversary with City of Heroes — 28 January 2006. I don’t have a “first post” here on Blog of Heroes because … well … I was a bit reluctant to let on about it publicly.
Margie started playing in February (I gave her a subscription for Valentines Day).
On the one hand, that seems like a huuuuuge chunk of time — seven years, OMG! On the other hand, so much has happened in my life during that tenure on the game, and so much has changed, it seems like it’s been much, much longer.
I started in Issue 3, by the by. And when I think back to the game at that time — no crafting, no “no use slotting more than three of anything into a power” (ah, the days of Perma-Haste), the introduction of so many zones and other game mechanics …
I’ve drifted to and from the game over the years. And pretty much nobody I know who played it — with the exception of Margie, of course — still does. But it remains fun, new content keeps being added, and new alts and powers keep things pretty darned fresh.
Don’t know if I’ll be playing it in another seven years, but don’t feel any particular itch at the moment to stray.
(As a personal trip down memory lane, this listing of alts I had in late February is fun — two of them (Psi-clone and Torchielle) eventually dinged 50; one (Velvet) stalled in the low 30s; the rest got deleted at one point or another …)
Oi! I’m on a SWToR hiatus, but still active in the game (OK, fremium ATM), but the whole Repeat Offenders Network is still in there, and has been since issue 2. I think we still have several members who started with Beta. And we still regularly get new folks joining our network.
There’s just something about CoH that trips the tripper of gamers looking to play Supers that nothing else has even scratched. As I play through SWToR I am constantly amazed at the lessons that CoX learned that no one has been leveraging.
Happy anniversary!
As with most MMOs, my interest in CoH waned after about a year (the implosion of our Supergroup Alliance may have hurried this along a bit). Only LotRO has held my interest substantially longer (the 5th anniversary is coming up, and time in beta has already pushed my play time over that mark).
I’ve tried CoH since it went F2P, and the controls now seem counterintuitive. Plus, my main is stuck in Dark Astoria (the game won’t let him through the gate so he can leave). Oh, well.
Avo,
DA has been revamped and you’re stuck in a dead version of the zone. If you use /Stuck or one of the teleport powers (Wentworths, Mission tport, supergroup, O portal, etc.) [which you may not have access to . . . ]. ?stuck should do it, though, if not petition a GM. =(
Oh, I see! Thanks for the clue.
🙂
I don’t think I have any of those teleport powers. I was kicked out of my supergroup when I announced that I was not renewing my membership, and I don’t know what “Wnetworth’s” and “O” are. There are missions that teleport one? Would I have one of those after six years away?
Nope. My only mission seems to be the DA one, and /stuck just moves me a few inches. Petitioning GM now.
Wait, they’re going to respond by email???
Ah. I’m not VIP, so support is limited to an email suggesting that I visit the forums.
Avo,
Sorry to slang out on ya, there! Wentworths in the Auction House. If you log out in one for a while you get a temporary power that allows teleporting to the auctionhouse in any zone that has one. Check your temporary powers, you may have one and not know it. (The icon is a yellow circle with a dollar sign or W [I forget which, sorry!])
O-Portal is the permanent power given by getting the badge in Ouroborous that gives a power to create a portal to go to Ouro from anywhere. Pocket D VIP pass allows teleport to Pocket D (it was a veteran reward, I think).
If all else fails join the channel ‘Repeat Offenders’ and (if you’re on Freedom, Virtue or Justice) explain your issue and ask for a temporary memebership to one of the SGs and then use the SG portal. Make sure to tell them that Arty sent ya!
If you’re not on those servers, you can still give it a go, some of our members do have personal SGs on other servers. Worth a shot!
Well, I was able to get out. The cursor wasn’t changing when I pointed at the guards, but clicking one let me out. I think I was right-clicking to try to interact. The controls in CoH now seem foreign to me.
Ah! The cursor there only changes when I point at their legs, or the very bottom of the shield.
I flew to the first contact I saw on Talos Island. He told me I needed to buy content to get missions from him.
/sigh
Avo, sorry I wasn’t on earlier to assist.
Yeah, the zone guards clicking space is kind of wonky right now. Not sure why, and, honestly, I almost never enter or exit zones via the war wall gateways any more.
If you have a character on Talos, you should, at a minimum, be able to take police band missions. You should have one of the police showing up in your Contacts; go to him, and you’ll then get the police band popping up. Those are one-off missions, but you can do them freely.
There should be some other contacts in Talos that you can get to that don’t require a pay account, too.
