Pain Perdu or “lost bread” is the original French Toast from France. With a crisp crust and rich interior, it’s a sinful brunch treat.
Filling Ingredients:
- 6 oz. soft cream cheese spread (not the block of cream cheese)
- 1/4 c raspberry jam
- 6 1-inch thick slices of bread (Texas Toast)
French Toast Batter Ingredients:
- 3 eggs
- 3/4 cup milk or cream
- 1/4 c sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- butter for griddle pan
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Mix the cream cheese and jam with a mixer or spoon until blended together.
- Take 2 slices of bread per serving, and spread a thick layer of cream cheese mixture to the center of a slice of bread.
- Top with another slice of bread to sandwich the mixture.
- Mix ingredients of batter together.
- Dip each “sandwich” into the batter and let them soak for a minute or two.
- Heat a large griddle pan over medium high heat,
- Add butter.
- Grill until golden on each side.
- Transfer to a pan and place in oven, 10-15 minutes, until cooked through and custardy in the middle.
