Literal paternalism

I would hope that, prior to 17, if my daughter had a concern that required emergency contraception that she would come to my wife and/or me for assistance. If she didn't feel comfortable doing that (not beyond the realm of reason), I would hope she would do what she felt had to be done, and that she would be able to do so.

Apparently Pres. Obama's fatherhood trumps my fatherhood (perhaps he's a father of two daughters), and he gets to decide what restrictions my daughter has on her options. He's decided to support (if not order) his HHS Secretary to override the FDA scientific and policy analysis that it was safe and helpful for "Plan B" emergency contraceptives to be available over the counter. Instead, Plan B will only be available to her, until she's 17, with a prescription. Which means she has to come to us, and has to get an appointment with a doctor first; or, alternately, go without and deal with a pregnancy.

Barack — will you be available for other fatherly decisions and caretaking of my daughter? I mean, if that's the job you're angling for, maybe you can help her get ready for school in the morning, too, or harangue her to keep her room clean. Otherwise, thanks for nothing. #ddtb

  1. This has been this way for a while…what you have to understand is that this really has very little to do with anything other than control of women's bodies and control in general. The people with the money will be the ones getting these products and/or services to prevent or end pregnancy where as the lower and underprivileged classes will be left in the cold. It wouldn't really pay to have poor people have access to safe and affordable birth control options – then they wouldn't be able to be used in arguments for the poor getting "too much help" as it is.

  2. Less than a year before the election he simply can’t give the abortion-fetishists this big a piece of ammo.

That said, I fully agree with you Dave, that this would move forward in a sane country. Too bad we don’t live there.

    1. The “abortion fetishists” are already screaming from the rooftops. It’s not like he’s going to make friends or quiet enemies by this action.

I dunno. Maybe the idea is that Joe Sixpack would be more outraged to be told Obama is encouraging Joe’s 13yo daughter to take the Morning After Pill — which is, after all, “abortion” — without Joe’s knowing about it. A few moments of rational thought would put paid to that — but, as you say, that’s not the country we live in.

  3. That would assume Joe Sixpack isn’t “having an incestuous relationship” with his daughter, aka raping her regularly, which is why she might need a) the Morning After Pill or b) an abortion without her parents’ knowledge, much less consent.

She’d need to be taken to a shelter, get counselling, and a chance at a new life, but that’s almost beyond the scope of this issue, if you don’t look too hard.
