Earth abides … but people may not

It's not that rising CO2 levels will destroy the planet. But they could make it uninhabitable for humans. And long before that, they could destroy (and provoke us to destroy) our own civilization, as the remarkable economic web that have led so many of us in the US to a life far more comfortable (and lengthy) than the vast majority of humans have ever known … are simply rent asunder by rising tides, disrupted food chains, and war. #ddtb

Alun Salt gave great advice about not bothering to engage idiots, pigs, denialists or trolls (here, among other places).  He said I should avoid lengthy answers to blogs that have little audience….

  1. Yea, DH is always making jokes about who he is going to eat first when the food runs out. While they are jokes, he is serious about the food shortages and how the world could turn into a Mad Max type of place while we fight each other.

  2. To sustain the whole world’s population to a European level of consumption, we need two planets. To sustain it to a US level of consumption we need four.#

And that stat is about 10 years old…

    1. @LH – Yup. We’re burning our seed corn in terms of natural resources (esp. renewable ones like fish stocks and soil), but it makes such a comfortably warm/profitable fire it’s hard to get folks to stop. Tragedy of the Commons, writ globally.

  3. Dave, your readers here are more dedicated than mine. You get more comments on a comment on my post than I get on the post.

I loved the response from a Ron Paul supporter I know: ‘If civilization destroys itself, everyone with a gun will be better off.’

But the same guy, a few years ago, was all up in arms about Eric Pianka’s noting that among the best hopes for preserving lizards is the possibility that we humans will destroy ourselves first.

Rule 1: It’s all about the politics. Rule 2: On issues of environment, and human survival, don’t forget Rule 1.

    1. @Ed – On the RP supporter you mention: “If civilization destroys itself, everyone with a gun will be better off” … for about one generation, or however long it takes for the ammo to run out or go bad. At which point you have a rather awkward club. But, hey, it won’t be the government coming to pry that gun out of your cold, dead fingers — it’ll just be your neighbor, or the Mad Max squad from the neighboring village …

Anyway, if I knew what posts would engender comments and which wouldn’t, I’d be rich off of AdSense revenue or something. 🙂 I will note that in this singular case, half the comments came off of the Google+ version of the post (rerouted over here).
