Sometimes people are just jerks.
And other times, they aren't, but they seem like it.
And sometimes, so are we.
We always make a million excuses for ourselves (sometimes with justification), but rarely for others. "Oh, I have a really good reason to cut in line here, to take this last cookie, to cut off that car, to not hold the elevator."
We are, almost certainly, too easy on ourselves and too harsh on others.
Or, as Longfellow put it, "Believe me, every heart has its secret sorrow which the world knows not, and oftentimes we call a man cold, when he is only sad."

And, sometimes, too hard, +steph wanamaker — but I think the slippery slope points more the other way.
Be present. No regrets, no false desires… just presence.
Hard to (remember to) do, but it works both against being too harsh, and against going too easy on ourselves.
