The RIAA and other content producers have made much of the alleged stat that tracks from Eminem’s newest CD were the Number 1 download on music sharing services before the CD was released. “You see?” they thundered. “Internet piracy is a huge problem! We must further regulate the market!”
Problem is, it seems like a lot of those files may have been intentionally put up there by the record label itself. And the intent may have been to promote the album by word of mouth, to try and prevent “real” illegitimate downloads … and, perhaps, to inflate piracy numbers.
