Do you have a backup of your blog?
Shouldn’t you?
What if it got hacked? What if your host went under (or had a hardware failure and realized that their backups sucked)?
How much effort, how much of your life would you lose?

Great point, Dave. I periodically download my Access file from the host, but I hadn’t done it in more than two months. Thanks for reminding me.
I make backups.
And I think that’s really the point, but I guess I took exception to the idea that I was losing any part of my life with that.
(Having been unable to recreate my old blog on my new server (couldn’t do Berkeley DB, but restarted blog as MySQL) I know all about loss of effort. I guess I was just surprised by how little it mattered. I don’t chronicle my special moments. My blog is about me, but it’s more snapshots of moments, and I was never good at taking pictures.)
I’ve set up a monthly reminder to do exports. I should probably FTP the whole site down, but that’s a different magnitude of effort.
I suppose the importance of it has to do with what you’re using your blog for. For me, it’s a journal, an extension of my memory, and, frankly, a legacy for my kid(s). I’d be really, really unhappy if it went poof.
But that’s me.
A good reminder, a good self-ref of blog intent.
I just finished getting all mine stashed. Even if half of the posts aren’t worth history… who’s to say what is valuable a year or two from now?
Thanks.
