As a long-term diceless RPG player (Amber, and now Nobilis), and as someone who’s played around with a number of Supers systems, this review of the new combination of the two in the Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game sounds pretty interesting. Unlike most diceless games, it still seems to have a lot of mechanics built around it. Hmmmmm.

It also sounds like it’s worth waiting until the next edition, so that the core rules can be cleaned up and further fleshed out. Assuming it gets there, since Marvel RPGs are notoriously short-lived.

Not that I seem to be planning on running any games any time soon, dagnabbit.

  1. Man, I hate when I refresh the screen before I hit post.

Anyway, my comment can basically be summed up as a snide “a diceless system that needs tweaking? none of us have ever done that before…” I guess it sounded interesting enough that I’d pick it up just to encourage a second edition. After tweaking stats, powers, sorcery, and combat in Amber, a few hole-patches to the system sound like no big deal.

The resource allocation things sounds a LOT like the Nobilis mechanic of splitting points between Effect and Penetration. Cool.

  2. Did you get the free rules in Inquest #96? Included just about everything but the character creation rules.

Of course, I have nobody to play RPGs with these days. 🙁
I’m lucky to get a HeroClix game in every couple of weeks.

  3. I pick it up with my comics. First week of each month.

It’s almost entirely MGT-oriented, but the HeroClix price guides (and occasional scenario/preview/strategy article) keep me buying it.
