Aside from a brief flurry about gay rights the other day, things here have been pretty apolitical. I mean, I’ve been spending more time nattering about Kitten’s toilet training than on The Issues of the Day.
I guess that’s because I’m running at 150% capacity at the moment, job-wise, and home project-wise, and just haven’t been able to muster the intellectual creativity, emotional strength, or Googling time to do justice to what few Serious Topics have floated past me of late.
Politically, I refuse to comment on any of the Democratic contenders until much closer to the primaries. For one thing, I haven’t seen or heard anyone who’s impressed me all that much. For another, as soon as I set my heart on a candidate, that will be the touch of death, and he’ll drop out and become a hermit somewhere in Idaho.
The only other burning issue is Iraq, and not only have we flogged the basics on that one to death, but the ongoing situation is so far from clear definition that it defies rational analysis (which is why we’ve had so much irrational analysis about it of late). And, no, I don’t want to talk about my not wanting to talk about it.
Liberia is an interesting side show, but moreso for seeing people maneuver around to decide how, politically, they need to deal with it (never mind arguing the issue of US intervention/peace-keeping there on the merits). Is Bush making noises about providing US troops there an imperialist aggression? A response to a dire humanitarian need? A reflection of historical ties to that nation? A fool squandering of more US lives? A bid for oil and other natual resources? A strategically unwise dilution of US troop strength elsewhere? An answer to folks who argued that the US doesn’t get involved in humanitarian interventions? A distraction from domestic problems? A sop to the African-American community? An insult to the African-American community? An example of the US being willing to work with others internationally? An acknowledgement that it’s all somehow the fault of the US in the first place? The Liberian situation, to the extent that it’s gotten any news play, has been more a mirror of the commentator than a serious debate.
Hmmm. I guess that counts as a blog post about it. Damn.
Ah, well. Back to work.
