Roadmap?

No, we’re not being overly-sensitive to the Saudis. No, never. We just make sure they don’t see any dirty words on our maps of them. Like, “Israel.” (via InstaPundit)…

  1. That’s our State Department…Always thinking of others. Not only didn’t they label Israel on the map, but Gaza and the West Bank are also left off of it. No need to worry the Saudi’s about the Palestinians (unlike this http://www.state.gov/p/nea/ci/israel/ “target=”new”>map, and this http://www.state.gov/p/nea/ “target=”new”>map).

It’s also nice to see that DoS is looking out for the Iranian’s by not showing
http://www.state.gov/p/nea/ci/c2404.htm “target=”new”>Turkey, or the Egyptians over powering hated of the Syrian’s http://www.state.gov/p/nea/ci/c3729.htm “target=”new”>here.

On the plus side, the DoS is making nice with China by showing Taiwan as part of http://www.state.gov/p/nea/ci/israel/ “target=”new”>China (click Republic of China).

  2. Actually, the Saudi map does show the demarcation lines for the West Bank and Gaza, though they are unlabeled.

Re the Iran and Egypt maps, at least, arguably, there’s no room for the other country’s legend. If Lebanon can be shown on the Saudi map, there seems little reason to not have Israel.

The China map (actually here) is also amusing in a way that’s not. There is a separate page on Taiwan, but it remains agnostic on Taiwan being formally independent.

  3. Ahhh…

But would you be able to fit Israel and the West Bank and Gaza in that same space, and the boundary lines for Israel are shown as well.

That chunk of the map was probably left nameless due to space issues, and not some nefarious plot by the State Department to placate the Saudi’s like the Right-wingers are screaming. If it were, it would say PALISTINE on that part of the map.

And Frell….I put the wrong chunk in the China spot. There is a separate page for Taiwan, but the map points to the “whole” of China.

  4. Yes, which is why it’s so unamusing. But I find US policy toward the PRC and ROC to be — well, more twisted a knot than I’d care to have to untangle. My sympathies tend toward Taiwan, though, which makes the pussyfooting around with the map more than a bit irksome.

I doubt something as overt as “PALISTINE” would show up on the DoS site, but I can actually imagine somebody at State getting a complaint from someone at the Saudi embassy and deciding it’s okay to sin by omission. I certainly think you could fit “Israel” into the space provided, even if you footnoted it like it is everywhere else the Occupied Territories are shown at the DoS site. (Shrug)
