A lot of common beliefs about body language and deception are, not surprisingly, greatly over-simplified or just plain wrong. Beyond that, I’ve seen studies indicating that supposed experts in spotting liars (e.g., police detectives and the like) are just as likely to be wrong as anyone else.

So much for that “Sense Motive” roll …

  1. Saw a show on TV last year in which Secret Service guys explained that they knew Clinton was lying in the Lewinsky scandal because his brow wrinkled. They showed a clip of Clinton saying “I did not have sex with that woman.” His eyebrows went up, wrinkling his brow.

Here’s what confuses me. seems as if every time I see President Bush speak, his eyebrows rise and move toward each other, causing him to squint and look confused. Does that mean that everything he says is a lie? Hmmm.

Reminds me of that old schtick, “How do you know when a used car salesman is lying? His lips are moving.” (You can replace “used car salesman” with “politician,” or “lawyer,” or…)

I’m going to have to try that eye contact thing, though. Especially if I can go without blinking for 30 or 40 seconds. Might be kind of fun.
