Amidst all the foofoorah over casting of the upcoming Fantastic Four movie (the latest of which has Jessica Alba of Dark Angel as the comic-book-fair-haired Sue Storm) comes this little disturbing tidbit:
“It’s funny, high adventure,” [Avi Arad, Marvel Films chief] said, confirming rumours that that the Tim Story-directed movie will be primarily a comedy. “But you are going to tear up too. It’s a bittersweet comedy.”
“Bittersweet” is right.
I mean, yeah, I suppose you can make a “bittersweet comedy” out of anything — with sufficient talent. But every rumor I hear about this flick makes me more and more worried …

Mark Waid was fired from the FF comic when he refused to make the book fit the bittersweet comedy plot of the proposed movie. Now, I know that Waid gets fired quite a bit, but that was one stand I can support!
And I’m glad that that was re-hired before too long.
Okay, you can do comedic elements in FF. Lee started it, and, heck, Waid actually does a nice job of that. The Ben/Johnny rivalry, for example (or the Sue/Johnny element that Waid has brought in).
But it’s not a comedy, per se, any more Firefly is a comedy (even if it sometimes has me in stitches).
*sigh*
