They finished up the area in the utility yard, pretty much, and started in on the front of the garage, stripping the old siding off and beginning the new stuff. Evidently the original construction was a little sketchy around the garage door frame, so they did some reinforcement there as the sheathed everything in Tyvek (which came in hand during the rainstorm …)

So far, it’s looking faboo. The only two minor glitches — called to their attention now — are …

  1. Around the security light in the side yard — they didn’t cut around the box properly, so the round mount of the lights has little squared-off corners of house innards showing behind it. I could simply caulk it, if need be, but I want to make sure similar things don’t happen with the other lights.
  2. They’re replacing the trim around the windows (though not around the doors), and it’s being replaced (in the one instance so far) in the stained color, not in white as we’d expected/discussed. Margie checked with them on this this morning, and it sounds like a disconnect between us and them (the corner trim should be in the stain, the window trim should be in white). They said it wouldn’t be a problem — the painter who will be touching up the siding and nails will have to repaint practically the whole window trim anyway, so it can be done in white.

Aside from that, we’re very happy with how it’s going, the workers are friendly and efficient (though, even though the contract says they work business hours Monday-Saturday, I’m really hoping they don’t show up and begin pounding at 7:00a Saturday. That would be very unfortunate).

They’ve put a “This work being done by [fill in the company name]” sign in the front flower bed, which I don’t begrudge them any, even though the HOA said it was verboten. I’ll let the HOA discuss it with them — I passed on the instructions when I signed the contract, and will studiously stay out of the way (esp. since I think it’s a stupid restriction).

And we still have to figure out the overall color scheme for the place — trim and accent color, and what we’re doing with the garage door (itself, and its color).

So far, though, so good.
