Traveling over to the UK, I need to do something about my phone. My Nokia 8265 is TDMA, which standard is not supported in Europe. I need to convert over to GSM, which is expanding in coverage here in the US, too.
Which raises what sort of phone to get. I really like the Nokias, but that selection is limited further by what is offered through our company contracts. I’m thinking the Nokia 3120, at this point — I’d like to get one with an integrated camera, but I’m a scosh concerned over some of the security concerns that folks have (and whether I might then, paradoxically, not be able to take it to some places where I need to travel on business). The 3120 is actually smaller than the 8265, with longer battery life.
The more advanced model I’m looking at is the 3200, which has an integrated camera, which would be keen — assuming I didn’t find I was shut out from going places on business because of security concerns. Still, it would be keen, and the dimensions are comparable to what I have right now.
Of course, I’d like to keep my current phone number, but that may not be possible. Stay tuned.
You may wish to stick with a non-photo phone since they are starting to take photo phones away from folks going to the movies on the west-coast (someplace called the ArcLight theaters, not to mention Concerts here).
It will be interesting to see how long photo phones are going to be around vs. the inconvience off having to check them at the door wherever you go.
That thought had occured to me. That and the general craptacular quality of camera phones.
Went ahead with the order for the Nokia 3120 — pretty much the same as I have now, except a built-in speaker phone (but a proprietary ear jack interface). And, of course, it works in the UK.
Lou and I both have the 3100, which looks very similar to your 3120, but without the camera. They’re both GSM, and we could keep our numbers.
The built-in speaker phone is neat, but I’ve found I’ve turned it on accidentally a few times when meaning to “hang up” the phone. These buttons are so damned tiny!
No camera on the 3120, in fact, but, yes, it’s mentioned by a number of people to be very similar to the 3100.
Maybe this may help maybe not. I bought a $20 POS phone for going to Europe and used it only over there and then switched right back to my wonderful Nokia. If you are going to lose something in Europe better to be POS you really have no emotional attachment to.
I’m hopefully unlikely to lose my phone whilst there — and since I’d like to retain my number and go through Official Company Channels, I need to go ahead and change away from my current Nokia. Alas.
Though having a speaker phone will be nice. 🙂
