Margie’s finally gotten her long-promised notebook computer from the office, a Dell Latitude D600. W00T!

Now comes the long process of …

… getting it hooked up to our home network.
… looking into docking station options (like this?)
… looking into KV switches for keyboard/mouse/monitor sharing between Margie’s home desktop and her notebook.

Things are now officially a Lot More Complicated. Though, if she sets it up right, she can bring it and use it out in California at the Ks like I do, and so on and so forth.

  1. Dude! Wal-Mart totally has the the coolest IOgear KVM switch!!!

Oh, wait… you’re not a fan of the giant prozac-face – well you could probably get the same KVM sw. at a more socially responsible retailer. Anyway, IOgear stuff has impressed me with their designs. I just hooked one of their USB hub + multi-card readers to my desktop machine and like it a lot.

  2. I use the Dell D/View stand with my D600. You use this to use the laptop display as a second monitor. Combine that with a 20″ flat panel and it rocks! My D600 works with my home network seemlessly. What I found shocking was the range of the wireless connections. When I looked on the TruMobile WLAN utility I saw the wireless LAN three houses down. At least they had the good sense to encrypt their network.

  3. Alas, the security gremlins at Margie’s employer have her notebook locked down, so I couldn’t install the wireless PCMCIA card or drivers. Once that’s in, we’ll progress to getting her tied to her office (with both machines), and further figure out things from there.

If nothing else, it will help her a lot in getting office work done from home when I’m on business (see: calendar for May, calendar for June).

  4. We use those port replicators here at our office for the few Dells we have, and they are distinctly a time-saver. I’d go for it if you have an external keyboard/mouse/monitor already.
