United is finally giving up on the bits of the DIA luggage system it has used since the airport opened in 1995.
United Airlines spokesman Jeff Green says scrapping the system will save the carrier $1 million a month which is now being used to operate and maintain the current system.
The airline also pays $60 million to the airport every year to lease the flawed system and will be forced to continue those payments for the time being.
The only part they’ve been actually using is the inbound (from the concourses to the terminal on arrival). And, to be honest, United’s speed with arriving baggage has been better than the other carriers at DIA (with bags, as often as not, beating me to the carousel). But it’s hard to argue with $1MM/month.
