I filled up the car for $1.99/gal. at the local Safeway gas station last night.
I’m not sure if it’s more amazing that prices have dropped that far down over the past several weeks, or that I’m thrilled by $1.99/gal. gas prices.

Wonderful! (dusts off hands) Problem solved. I guess we can forget about oil prices now. 😉
And I am once more reminded of why I really don’t mind public transportation that much…
Well, I can drive 35 minutes to the office. Or I can take a bus that will take me an hour and a half (or maybe it was two and a half hours — it’s been a few years since I checked out the schedules), not counting the time for the two transfers. To me, that’s a no-brainer.
When our office was downtown, I was able to take an express bus practically to the office — and did, for a year, and loved it. But since our office is no longer located at a hub, it’s no longer a viable alternative for me.
I have to say after moving to an area that has “Real” public transportation that Denver pretty much sucks when it comes to alternatives. It’ll be a little better for some folks when they get the lightrail running to the DTC, but overall RTD is pathetic.
In Portland, there is hardly anywhere that you can’t get to on the MAX (lightrail) or on a bus. Most of the bus lines and all of the MAX lines have “frequent service” so they run every 15 minutes. There’s a whole area of the downtown area that is “fareless square” so you don’t even have to pay for the ride. It is almost shocking to be able to see it done right.
The “low” prices on the gas in your car will cushion the shock when the gas you use to heat your home rises in price as much as 75% this winter. Let’s hope it doesn’t rise that far and doesn’t stay high that long. I can figure out alternative ways of getting to work. But there are few alternative ways of heating a house with no fireplace!
