Is Iraq our national Kobayashi Maru, a no-win scenario?
If we’re Left we talk about lies, false premises, politicization and casualties. If we’re Right we try to boil it down to “stay the course” vs. “cut and run.” If we’re moderate, or at least if we’re this moderate, we rage about incompetence and missed opportunities.
Nobody talks much about what we do now.

Ready yet to hear about a cabinet-level “Peace Department”? To do this kind of analysis up-front. All my Mennonite friends saw this coming.
A cabinet-level “Peace Dept.” wouldn’t have done anything about this, any more than a cabinet-level Treasure Dept. has kept the current administration from overspending.

That’s the other problem — every time I hear “Dept. of Peace,” I get an Orwellian flash (and I get too many of those as it is).
An Orwellian flash is doubleplus ungood.
Is that the problem, an association with an old story by George Orwell? I don’t give a damn what you call it, there is no part of our government that does analysis from a peace-studies perspective. The crude notion that we can solve our problems by killing our enemies has the most muscle in Washington.
I would at least start by renaming the DOD “The War Department”. Defense is carried out by dozens of agencies all the way down to the local sheriff who notices somethin’ ain’t quite right ’bout that truck.
Somebody should be holding the govenment to a higher standard of analysis. The real cost of war, and the real benefits of an extremely patient, shrewder approach to peace. We have a war department (currently misnamed) we should have a peace department.
Actually, I could go with the (re)naming of the Defense Dept. the War Dept. It would certainly cause make their role that much clearer.
From what I’ve read they got plenty of good analysis. They just ignored it in favor of the “They’ll throw flowers and candy at our troops,” neocon pipe-dream.
