Gah – forgot all about this one (still need to trot over and do BD’s latest update, but, for the moment).

In the Chicago Trib Super-Hero contest, my votes (ex post facto, as the tallies have already been made) for the Second Round:

STAN LEE REGION

  1. No. 1 Superman vs. No. 4 Capt. America — Cap’s the best there is of his sort, but he’s basically got nothing that would stop Supes.
  2. No. 2 Wonder Woman vs. No. 3 The Thing — I think Ben would hesitate too long to slugfest with with a woman. Strengthwise, too, I think WW has the edge, and is a better warrior than Ben’s brawling. Advantage: Wonder Woman.

KEVIN SMITH REGION

  1. No. 1 Batman vs. No. 5 Buffy Vamp. Slayer — Buffy’s good, but she’s not Batman good.
  2. No. 2 The Flash vs. No. 3 Silver Surfer — SS has enough cosmic mojo to cause the Flash serious problems with, like, changing the laws of time and space. SS has enough of an edge to win here.

NICOLAS CAGE REGION

  1. No. 1 Spider-Man vs. No. 5 Punisher — I’d go with Spidey, assuming he was willing to be brutal enough and the Punisher didn’t have a chance to prep the battleground.
  2. No. 2 Iron Man vs. No. 3 Green Lantern — With yellow no longer an issue, Hal takes Tony apart at the seams.

ROSARIO DAWSON REGION

  1. No. 1 Wolverine vs. No. 5 Daredevil — Potentially a pretty close battle, except I can’t think of much DD can do to take Wolvie down. I give it to Logan.
  2. No. 3 Hulk vs. No. 7 Kitty Pryde — The unstoppable force against the intangible object? Sooner or later, Hulk connects and that’s all she wrote.

Results, and the rest of the competition, below:

I win all the votes except for Buffy beating Batman (!), and Kitty baaaarely beating the Hulk.

Feh.

ROUND 3

  1. No. 1 Superman vs. No. 2 Wonder Woman: Classic. Have to give it to Supes, though I would accept the opposite argument.
  2. No. 3 Silver Surfer vs. No. 5 Buffy Vamp. Slayer: Battle of the angstmeisters! Silver Surfer in about three nanoseconds.
  3. No. 1 Spider-Man vs. No. 3 Green Lantern: This should be Hal’s battle, but Spidey’s enough of a chaos-bringer that I’m going to go with the underdog here.
  4. No. 1 Wolverine vs. No. 7 Kitty Pryde: He taught her everything she knows about fighting. Wolvie takes her, unless he allows sentiment to make him stupid.

Final tally: I win 3 of 4, with Buffy somehow defeating the Surfer. It’s whacky.

ROUND 4:

  1. No. 1 Superman vs. No. 5 Buffy Vamp. Slayer: Clearly Buffy has the popular vote here, but I refuse to go along with it. Superman has her wrapped up, even with his vulnerability to magic.
  2. No. 1 Spider-Man vs. No. 1 Wolverine: I have to go with Spidey here. He’s dealt with lunatics with blades and regnerative factors before.

Final tally: The Buffyistas magically make up a victory for their girl.

ROUND 5:

  • No. 5 Buffy Vamp. Slayer vs. No. 1 Spider-Man: Given that she’s defeated Phoenix, the Silver Surfer, and Superman so far, she should win. But Spidey’s the perennial underdog victor, and dagnabbit, I will not concede defeat for him. Spidey by a mask-covered nose.

Final tally: Buffy gets 85% of the vote. No. Way.
