I already have two Twitter accounts — one for “me” and one for my Blog of Heroes blog. I now have need of a third, as a “professional” presence.
I’ve been using TwitterGadget as my main client (and it’s a great little client), and the actual Twitter web page as the second (which is fine, save that you can’t easily RT), but with a third account, it’s about time to hook into one of those multi-account Twitter clients I hear that all the cool kids have.
Consulting the wisdom of the masses, does anyone have a recommendation. (I can and will take a look at what people who I follow are using, but if someone has a specific recommendation that would likely save time.)
Requirements:
- Allows sign-in to multiple Twitter accounts (separate streams).
- Small footprint. I don’t need it to wax my car or feed my cat or replicate my Amazon wishlist. I just want basic Twitter capabilities.
- I don’t mind paying a modest fee, but, again, I’m looking for a well-done small client, not a lumbering behemoth.
So, any thoughts?
Did a bit of research with the Tweeters I follow.
A lot of people evidently Twitter from their iPhone. Or directly from the web. Or from TweetDeck (which I looked at once upon a time but struck me as overfeatured and bloated).
Les apparently uses both Twhirl and Seesmic. I will poke into them anon.
Okay, have Seesmic installed; let’s see how that works.
Turns out Twhirl is a predecessor of Seesmic. Certainly the latter seems more polished.
Twitterfox.
Also, Twitterfox.
And did I mention Twitterfox? Does exactly what you want.
From your blackberry, you can use three different aps, one for each account. I use:
– Tiny Twitter. Rich feature set. Annoyingly won’t let you ‘draft’ a post longer than 140 characters, then downsize it. I use this for my main account.
– TwitterBerry. Very functional. Displays things slightly differently – Unlike Tiny Twitter, browsing the current stream of updates from the people you follow only shows the first two lines of a post, so you have to click on a post to read the whole thing if it’s near the length-cap. HUGE UPSIDE: it lets you ‘draft’ overlong messages and then downsize them before sending (and won’t let you send if it’s too long). I use this for my @finnras “Adrift” story, for which it is absolutely perfect.
– twibble. I haven’t used it that much, but it’s a popular and supported. I have it on my phone for when I need a third twitter client.
I was going to say that on my computers I use Twhirl which apparently has recently started tagging itself as Seesmic in the tweets. The client itself has a logo that says Twhirl by Seesmic. Don’t know if they got bought out or have always been a part of that company or what.
I used TweetDeck for awhile, but I find I prefer Twhirl. I believe both will support multiple accounts, though I haven’t tried it with either one of them. Both are programmed in Adobe Air which means any platform with Adobe Air should be able to run them. It works just fine on my Linux machine at work as it does on my Windows PC at home.
As for phone clients, I don’t have a smart phone so I don’t have a twitter client for it. Someday maybe, but not right now.
I just checked and it appears that Twhirl also talks with identi.ca, laconi.ca, FriendFeed, and Seesmic. Of which I’ve only heard of the last two. It appears Seesmic is a separate client from Twhirl though the latter is still being updated. Seesmic will also do Facebook like TweetDeck, but I haven’t any need for that.
If you want to try the Twhirl client it can be gotten here.
Triple dipping to say don’t bother trying the Twhirl client. Just read that they’ve dropped support for TwitPic in favor of using something called yFrog. The whole reason I switched from TweetDeck to Twhirl was because I wanted to use TwitPic. I’ll probably drop Twhirl for something else now.
If you go to the Seesmic page, you’ll see a note toward the bottom linking to Twhirl, noting “Twhirl is our previous social software desktop client, based on the Adobe AIR platform.” The two behave very similarly.
Seesmic has a nice web client, though only for a single account.
I really like Seesmic, but it does an awful amount of flickering around updates.
Seesmic gives you a choice of photo clients, including both TwitPic and Yfrog. Also URL-shorteners.
Doyce, I will give it a try. Um … what was the name again?
Oh, and TinyTwitter does let you draft >140 characters (just tried it). Haven’t had the compulsion to have more than one account on my BB, but good to know there are options.
Trying TwitterFox, now called (bleah) Echofon. So far, so good.
