Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- New in Labs: Refresh POP accounts – Have this turned on. Excellent for those “We’ve just sent a confirmation email [to the account that gets sucked into your GMail] …” messages.
- The left side is the best side. – Some remarkable photos (colorized or at least color-enhanced) of a 40s-50s Los Angeles area. Must remember to note these to my Dad …
- Critic’s notebook: At long last, ‘Cats’ | Culture Monster | Los Angeles Times – This is precisely why so many critics have such a bad rep — because they make it all about them. Short version: “I avoided this show because I expected it would be schlocky. Aren’t I cutely discerning? And when I finally saw it, guess what? Here’s all the schlock. Wasn’t I cutely prescient? Oh, and even when I was drunk years ago, I knew it was schlocky. Love me!” Yeesh.
- Norwalk boy, 7, calls 911 and saves his family – latimes.com – Crikey. Good job, boy! And good training job, parents!
- How The PlayStation Move Is NOT A Wii Remote [Gdc] – Some interesting innovations / improvements on the Wii remotes (possibly some drawbacks, too). Sony’s put a bit of thought into this.
- Do The New Tablets Own Up To The Hype? | The Onion – America’s Finest News Source – As someone who reads WAY too many trades … this was fabulous.
- Six Democrats Side With Banks, Ask For ‘Alternative’ To Landmark Student Lending Reform – They have deep concerns because … it might cost jobs that are the result of banks serving as middle-men between taxpayers and students taking out loans? Um … that sounds more like a reason to pass the legislation, not to eliminate jobs but because those jobs (plus the additional margin scooped out by the banks) are “friction” in the works, with both taxpayers and students as the folks taking the heat.
- 449 – “Great Party Place, Wisconsin”, or: America’s Beer Belly – I suspect my SoDak acquaintances can confirm this for their old home towns.
- 448 – Germany’s Worst School Names – An interesting and painful conundrum for the Germans. It’s hard to declare de-Nazification as political correctness, but many of the same ethical, linguistic, and symbolic issues apply to both.
- The Associated Press: NYC judge: Govt must stop blocking money to ACORN – Of course, this will make no difference to the Right’s noise machine.
- Bwuhahahahahah! – I pride myself that, as much as I LOVE AND ADORE AND LUST AFTER BACON this sort of thing (along with Bacon Ice Cream and Bacon Brownies and the like) holds no appeal for me.
- Ummm….no… – An incessently (if fascinatingly) depressing and desperation-filled TV series that ended in a nihilistic deus ex machina. Strip away the gotchas and betrayals — neither of which work game-wise — and what do you have? Yeah, not quite sure why this makes for MMO fodder.
- Visit NYC, Eat Breast-Milk Cheese – I’m not a huge cheese fan to begin with, but I find myself both vaguely fascinated and vaguely repulsed by this, and I suspect it’s all irrational on my part.
- EV Gray and the “fuelless engine” Fascination car – I’d settle for a conventional engine just to drive this beauty. Of course, it’s also probably Horribly Unsafe.
- Bad employee! 12% knowingly violate company IT policies – As someone who is in IT, who is a user of IT resource, subject to IT policies, and at one point was over our IT Security group … this makes perfect sense. And, yes, I’ve been known to break IT policy, though I do so knowingly and with a knowledge of the risks that I’m taking (and a willingness to take the consequences if it goes badly).
- J.D. Hayworth Is A Good Christian, And Don’t You Forget It! – “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matt. 6:1-6
- Wake up people. The banks are winning and consumers are losing – Money quote: “What is particularly galling about this is they are using our money, the bailout money, to lobby against reregulation.”
