- Why Is This Radical? A Town Debates LETTING Kids Ride Their Bikes to School – Mind-boggling. Are streets around schools that much more insane than they were when we were going to school? I was just a couple of blocks in elementary, but kids rode bikes there from the neighborhoods. I rode a couple of miles by bike, along two fairly busy roads, to junior high, and that was just what we did. It wasn’t seen as particularly or unusually life-threatening, and I think my mom would have gotten a big guffaw over the idea that she would only be a good mother if she dropped me off and picked me up.

- Certainty vs. Uncertainty: Understanding Scientific Terms About Climate Change | Union of Concerned Scientists – It is, perhaps, not surprising that ideologues, who deal with philosophical (and often religious) certainties, demand such certainty from science. Not surprising, but demonstrative of a fundamental misunderstanding of what science is about. Or, as George noted, “The Economist, a conservative magazine, puts it this way: there are two ways of approaching uncertainty. One is the ‘house of cards’ model, wherein any error brings the whole thing down. The other, more in accord with complex scientific questions, is the ‘puzzle’ model, in which you know in advance that there will be some trial and error, some fitting and rearranging of the puzzle pieces. Eventually, a picture begins to emerge and you can make an educated guess as to what it is even when not all the pieces are in place.”

- By god, this has to be a confused rationale for a poll – The point is not, of course, being sheltered from public mention of “God,” but whether acts and products from a representative government that’s not allowed to be in the religion biz should prominently mention “God.”
