- Deep Horizon Oil Well Gushing 42,000 Gallons Into Gulf Of Mexico Per Day – People forget that one of the reasons for the oh-so-unfair closure of the Pacific coast to oil exploration were a series of massive spills in the 60s. This sort of thing does happen. It doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t drill, but we shouldn’t pretend that it’s going to be a perfect or clean or ecologically trivial effort, and we should be including plans (and money) to deal with the inevitable problems.
- Republicans: petty and stupid [Pharyngula] – It’s petty to flood an Internet poll with unwanted (but authentically entered) answers. I know, because I’ve done it. But it’s stupid to run an Internet poll in the first place, and “petty and stupid” do this kind of crap with it.
- Security theater: are they satisfied now? : Effect Measure – Short version: people — even highly trained observers with plenty of time — get distracted when they spot something, and are more likely to miss something else. Which makes a scenario of, oh, spotting the 4 oz bottle of hair gel in the suitcase but missing the switchblade (or spotting the switchblade and missing the 4 oz explosive) a lot more likely.
