Unblogged Bits for Tue, 27 Apr 2010, 2:00PM

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. A GOP strategy that pays dividends – If the Dems are really trying to “bailout their Wall Street fat cat friends,” why are JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs giving most of their campaign money to the Republicans?
  2. Greenhouse gets shrill – Why are the Tea Partier’s appalled by big government tyranny in Arizona? Probably because a substantial proportion of them are nativists who aren’t at all sorry to see steps taken to deal with them damned furriners. Take a look at the TP rallies next time and see how many Hispanic faces you see.
  3. How Ben Nelson rolls – Nice hypocrisy there, Ben. Hope Mr Buffet’s contributions keep you warm at night.
  4. What one Muslim guy thinks of South Park death threat/Mohammed controversy – “Yes, it [the depiction] would make me uncomfortable and I can understand people being upset about it…but here’s whats more upsetting. Someone, in the name of a faith that I believe in, threatening another person for doing it.” Well said.
  5. feature: How Mendel started genetics by getting it mostly wrong – And this is why science is so useful and powerful: “It’s OK to be wrong in science, as long as you’re wrong in ways that lead to fruitful research.”
  6. Minnesota data capper in rush to build empire – Your willingly incurring a bunch of expenses assuming we’ll rush to okay your request does not actually mean that we should rush said okay. Idjits.
  7. “Powerpoint makes us stupid”–these bullets can kill – Pretty much. I end up writing (and rewriting and delicately crafting and editing and revising and excerpting and compressing and expanding) way too many PPT decks for my own good.
  8. Deep Horizon Oil Well Gushing 42,000 Gallons Into Gulf Of Mexico Per Day – People forget that one of the reasons for the oh-so-unfair closure of the Pacific coast to oil exploration were a series of massive spills in the 60s. This sort of thing does happen. It doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t drill, but we shouldn’t pretend that it’s going to be a perfect or clean or ecologically trivial effort, and we should be including plans (and money) to deal with the inevitable problems.
  9. Republicans: petty and stupid [Pharyngula] – It’s petty to flood an Internet poll with unwanted (but authentically entered) answers. I know, because I’ve done it. But it’s stupid to run an Internet poll in the first place, and “petty and stupid” do this kind of crap with it.
  10. Security theater: are they satisfied now? : Effect Measure – Short version: people — even highly trained observers with plenty of time — get distracted when they spot something, and are more likely to miss something else. Which makes a scenario of, oh, spotting the 4 oz bottle of hair gel in the suitcase but missing the switchblade (or spotting the switchblade and missing the 4 oz explosive) a lot more likely.
  11. Apostrophes vs Commas – I vote for apostrophes.
  12. Police Seize Jason Chen’s Computers – Iphone 4 leak – Gizmodo – Crikey. Overreacting, much, Apple?
  13. Droid Incredible review — Engadget – Hmmmm … may have found my next phone, though I’m going to try to roll over into a month-to-month with my current Blackberry so I can further examine and get my hands on one.

  1. Re: Apple

What do you espect from a company owned by a guy that always parks in handicap parking….

Which, thinking about it, is probably something else that Job’s is upset at Gawker/Gizmodo/Jolopnik about.
