- Pope Arrives in Britain Warning of ‘Aggressive Secularism’ – Links Nazi Tyranny to Atheism – As Dawkins notes, not only were the Nazi leadership not atheists (to the extent that they were organized, it was in a nationalistic, Christian-in-name religion with heavy Teutonic pagan trappings), but the vast majority of the German citizenry were Christians (Lutherans, mostly, with more Catholics toward the south). I would not blame the horrors of the Nazis on atheism, nor on Christianity (save that Christian anti-semitism — particularly strong amongst Luther’s followers — aided and abetted the Nazis scapegoating the Jews).
