Unblogged Bits (Mon. 20-Sep-10 1130)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Mila’s Daydreams | Yurock
  2. Conditional Risk
  3. Still evil and wrong: McIlhinney still leads a cover up of malaria facts
  4. City plans to bill pastor for security around planned Quran burning – CNN – While it’s hard to find to be too sympathetic to Rev. Jones (and, honestly, it was a responsibility whether he wanted the security for himself and surrounding areas of not), we also need to be careful that this doesn’t become a mechanism to punish or suppress unpopular speech. “You can say these things, but it will cost you $X in police protection” would be an easy thing to abuse.
  5. Google Is Making Your Account Vastly More Secure With Two-Step Authentication – I’ll be curious to see how this plays out. Yes, it’s annoying, but it’s also a serious uptick for security. The downside is that it seems to require you to have a mobile phone (your mobile phone) with you in order to access Google stuff, which is not necessarily a given in all circumstances or for all people.
  6. “GOP Aims to Erode White House Agenda” – By hook or by crook.
  7. San Francisco in fog with rays – Lovely
  8. About Obama’s recent comments – The question is, what are Dems — including liberal/progressive Dems — going to do about it? If the choice is a president who isn’t doing everything you think he should, and an opposition party that wants to undo what’s been done so far (if not moreso), what’s the right thing to do? Eating dog food isn’t appetizing, but if you’re faced with a choice between that and someone force-feeding you shards of glass, dragging your feet going for the can opener may not be productive.
  9. St. George soup kitchen ‘in trouble’ | The Salt Lake Tribune – I’m sure the increased demand and reduced donations are all because of those lazy people sitting around and luxuriating on unemployment …
  10. Radium woo: the bad health science of yesteryear wants to irradiate your colon – Boing Boing – This might have been one of those cases when you’d hope the snake oil salesman WASN’T including the “real” ingredients …
  11. Message to Muslims – I’m Sorry – NYTimes.com – There are those who see apologies as a sign of weakness. But more often, I think they are a sign of strength.
