So my friend Kate just got a new Android 2, and I offered to send her a list of the apps I use on my HTC Incredible (in hopes that she’ll do the same as she runs across something cool).
Then, having compiled the list, I realized I should just blog about it, so as to open the list to a broader community.
(I then managed to open a blog post on top of the list I’d already created, losing it. Stupid Chrome tab management …)
So here it is. The list does not include stuff that came bundled on the Incredible:
- Amazon.com: Spiffy little search/purchase widget for Amazon. Great to carry along with me to Best Buy, etc.
- Battery Widget: A better widget for showing battery life, plus easy control of various on/off wireless services (WiFi, GFS, etc.)
- BettrFlickr: A better Flickr app than the Official One.
- Dolphin Browser HD: Just installed this the other day, but it looks to be a superior browser to the bundled one. It also supports add-ons, such as LastPass integration.
- Dropbox: Same as the PC app (though by default it just syncs filenames until you say otherwise). Great way to exchange things between PC and phone.
- Goggles: Google Goggles, which does some nice searching, decoding, translating, etc. from images you capture. Haven’t found the killer use for it yet, but …
- IMDB: Search IMDB and impress all your friends with your movie trivia knowledge.
- LastPass: My password (etc.) lockbox, synced with my PCs.
- Calorie Tracker by Livestrong: For tracking calories. Syncs with the web site.
- NewsRob Pro: Syncs with Google Reader.
- Seesmic: My current Twitter client of choice.
- TouchDown: Used by our company for Exchange access.
- Wapedia: Wikipedia app.
- Watchdog Lite: Tracks apps for excess memory or CPU usage.
- WifiWidget: Various informative widgets for WiFi usage.
- Y5-Battery Saver: Tracks geographic locations where you signed into a free WiFi hotspot; when you return there, it will turn on WiFi (if it was off) so you can automatically connect again, and when you leave, it will turn the WiFi (if it was off before) back off.
I haven’t found any good games yet, but I haven’t looked that hard.
Any other suggestions (or comments) out there from my Throngs of Loyal Readers?

I only use two of those (14 & 16), and both were just installed in the last week or so. I have the following free apps:
ACast – podcast aggregator
Meridian – for listening to podcasts/music (I can’t control playback with my headphone buttons through ACast, so I use this)
Pandora – for listening to music (thanks to this, I now know that a tune I remembered from The Muppet Show is called “Java,” and I have found a copy)
MountUSB – one touch USB mounting when I plug the phone into the computer to transfer files
Abduction! – fun jumping cow game (I am not good enough at it to need to buy the full version)
Cribbage – single-player cribbage (ad-supported)
Android Lightsaber – makes lightsaber sounds when you swing the phone
Tricorder – turns phone into a TNG tricorder (which impressed Wil Wheaton when i showed it to him)
Not very much into listening to music (or things other than phone conversations) on the phone. I’ll check out Abduction, though.
Dolphin Browser sounded nice, but it doesn’t work for me. Firing it up results in an error:
Error 502 – Bad Request
The server could not resolve your request for url: http://home.dolphin-browser.com/
Hmm. Looks like a problem with the default start page. Will fiddle.
I use KeePass for all my passwords, and there is a version for the Android that is handy to have (as long as I remember to keep the db in sync between my PC, thumb drive, and phone).
Can’t live without Pandora. I haven’t listened to the actual radio in my car in months.
Google Listen is good for picking up various audio feeds, like This American Life, Fresh Air and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.
Since I travel a bit, I use TripIt. I email all my flight, hotel, and car info to it (or, more recently, just have it scan my inbox for them automatically), and it puts them all together in very handy itineraries along with maps and flight tracking. There is an Android app to view it, which is very cool…no more printing out, lugging around, and losing my travel info.
NewsRob, as you mentioned.
Those are my most used apps besides email. The only other one that’s very handy is AppBrain to keep track of them all.
That reminds me — I lost all my apps in having to do a factory reset a while back, and I don’t think I put TripIt back on. Good reminder.
