We urged you just two weeks ago to call your senators and representative and urge them to oppose the effort to repeal the law that prohibits open homosexuals from serving in the military, the law commonly known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
Why yes, yes you did.
Thanks to your phone calls, the repeal effort failed in the Senate on December 9.
Well, actually, I suspect my phone calls did not help stop the repeal effort. But someone’s calls did get enough Republicans (and a stray Democrat, as I recall) from allowing the matter to even come up for debate, even though it was tied to a critical defense bill. Well played, AFA — our troops may not get a raise or insurance for their kids, but at least they can be sure that they won’t have to serve next to someone that they hitherto did not realize was GAY.
But liberal Senators Harry Reid, Joe Lieberman, Susan Collins and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are dead set on ramming through a bill at the 11th hour that will allow open homosexuals into the armed services, which will do severe damage to readiness, recruitment and retention.
Or so the fearmongers say. There’s no indication that it would do “severe damage,” except in the fever dreams of those for whom TEH GAYZ = TEH DEVIL!!!!
Oh, and “liberal” + “Joe Lieberman” = “It Is to Laugh” — because, except for this particular cause, Joe has been anything but liberal, and an otherwise reliable vote for those on the Right.
If pro-homosexual lawmakers are successful, our military will change forever …
Just like it did when TEH BLAX!!! were allowed to serve next to Fine, Upstanding White Men. And just like it did when TEH WIMMIN!!! were allowed to serve next to Fine, Upstanding Examples of Manhood.
(Also, did you know they allow TEH ATHEISTSSSS!!! to serve? How the hell did they slip in?)
… and our national security will be compromised. The stakes are as high as they can be.
How is our national security going to be compromised again? Except, of course, because we know all of TEH GAYZ!!! are simply debauched sybarites who are out to outlaw Christianity, establish a communist gay state, corrupt our children, betray us to the Muslims, give all the other soldiers AIDS, and destroy our families. Not to mention pollute our precious bodily fluids.
Some Senators who voted against repeal last week are faltering in the face of political arm twisting. One of them may be yours!
Actually, both of my Senators voted in favor of repeal, thankyouverymuch.
There’s not much there there after that when all is said and done — just a way to get your Senators’ phone numbers, and a solicitation for (of course) money.
I remain amazed by how kneejerk homophobic DADT opponents tend to be. I could entertain an argument that the present time might not be the time to change this, or argue about the implementation schedule or process. But that’s not the deal here. These guys disapprove of homosexuality on moral grounds (we’ll grant them that for the moment, assuming it’s not just an aesthetic “ick factor” thing). From that, they attribute all the other vices (or lack of virtues) to those they disapprove of (gays, Muslims, liberals, whatever).
Gays aren’t just gays, perpetrators of a particular (in their eyes) sin. Instead, they become exemplars of all that is evil and wrong, all that is corrupt and antithetical to Christianity. As unrepentant sinners, they become paragons of sinfulness.
It’s not rational. But it’s entertainingly doltish … unless you’re the target of their ire.
