Unblogged Bits (Tue. 14-Dec-10 1030)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Dr. Seuss is Weeping – It seems like Dr. Seuss’ model is a sound one. A shame folks have such little appreciation for Christ, Christianity, or Christmas that they think if everything isn’t explicitly branded with a cross or a creche, everyone will forget Jesus and the Bible and become debauched heathens.
  2. Launch of a Delta IV Heavy – Cool …
  3. Restore your contacts – This question came up with me just the other day. It’s nice to see this feature.
  4. You Must Get Gun Range Training. But You Can’t Get Gun Range Training. – If we are going to allow gun ownership, and require (rightfully) training and certification in gun use, then using restriction of gun ranges as a back door means of restricting gun ownership is poor governance.
  5. The SWAT Team Would Like to See Your Alcohol Permit – I feel safer!
  6. Cloud Computing and the Wikileaks Precedent – I have concerns about the cloud in this way. Cloud computing is fabulously convenient in so many ways, but there are serious risks that the cloud may be down, may go out of business, or that your portion of it might be accidentally deleted, blocked from you for various reasons, etc. Not much I can do about that with Gmail (or that I’m willing to do as of yet), but I keep local copies (backed up) of all the photos I put out onto Flickr, Just In Case.
  7. Ten is the New Twelve – Those who are rabid about this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they are rabid about.
  8. GOP ‘Think Tank’ Unable To Defend Ad Claiming Murray’s Vote To Expand SCHIP Is Akin To Stomping On Children – Bottom line: “Government bad, so anything having to do with government, be it health coverage for children, feeding the poor, [or, one would think, buying body armor for troops] is so evil we can characterize it however we want.” Yes, it’s an asinine argument, but that does seem to be the message.
  9. The Top 14 Astronomy Pictures of 2010 – Beautiful.
  10. When ‘The Daily Show’ picks up the slack: Steve Benen
  11. Guest Starring Wil Wheaton – DORK TOWER, Tuesday, December 15, 2010 – Heh.
  12. Zits for 12/14/2010 – Heh. Yeah, this looks familiar. (Of course, sometimes it’s OUR room, so …)
  13. No more solar wind for Voyager 1 spacecraft – Cool.
  14. Detect Liars by Offering Them Two Choices – An interesting idea …

  1. 11. Ah, Wil! His villain Chaos just returned on Leverage, he plays an evil version of himself on The Big Bang Theory, plays a similar character on The Guild, and is the voice of Robin in DC Universe Online. He’s everywhere! Well, no. We really need to get him on Chuck. Start sending those emails, folks!
